Firefighter out there... question?

I just moved out from my parents and live in the bay area of San Francisco. I'm 18, and possess a high school diploma. I basically want to know how to get my foot in the door to become a fireman? Should I just drop by the station and get an app? (If thats possible). No, I dont have any college degree or past experience. Could anybody please shed some light?
